Imagine Cup 2008 IxD Competition
Dates: July 5, 2008, 24 hour competition
Collaborators: Will Odom
Award: 1st Place, Interface Design
Deliverable: Presentation
The Imagine Cup 2008 competition consisted of 3 rounds. To make it past the first two rounds, my colleague Will Odom and I submitted designs for the Energy Challenge project. After critique by the judges, we were selected to travel to Paris for the final round of the competition.
The final round consisted of a 24 hour on-site design challenge. We were given a brief describing a complex design problem with multiple groups of stakeholders. We had only 24 hours to iterate through a system of interface designs and create a presentation illustrating our designs and rationale. The challenge was to design a system that allowed senior citizens to participate in the measurement of environmental air quality. The components to be designed included a physical measurement device, desktop software, and a web portal for visualizing and sharing data.
We applied a user-centered approach to the problem, taking time to empathize with the needs of each user group and then creating personas and scenarios to guide our design decisions. The next day we presented our work to a panel of esteemed judges including Surya Vanka (senior manager of UX at Microsoft), Tom Chi (senior director of UX at Yahoo), and Neil Churcher (head of global design and UX at Orange). And.. we were awarded 1st place!
