Dates: September 2007 - June 2008
Partner Organizations: Utility Information Group, Residence Halls Association, Task Force on Sustainability
Award: World Finalist, 2008 Imagine Cup Interface Design Competition
Deliverables: Presentation | Workshop Paper
For my masters capstone project, I designed and implemented an energy and water conservation contest among Indiana University dormitories. The contest, titled the Energy Challenge, featured a dynamic website that provided students frequent feedback on consumption levels. The goal of the project was to utilize social influence and engaging visualizations to encourage more sustainable use of resources.
At the end of four weeks, students conserved an estimated 446,139 KWh of electricity and 613,919 gallons of water. This resulted in an estimated $26,000 in avoided utility costs and 801,454 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, which is equivalent to taking 67 passenger cars off the road for one year.
The project was selected as a World Finalist for Microsoft's 2008 Imagine Cup Interface Deisgn Competition.
